Questions about the Falls and Niagara River

Q: How old is Niagara Falls?
A: The Niagara River and Falls were created after the last ice age in North America began to reside about 12,500 years ago. In that time the waterfalls have traveled back the 7 miles along the river to where they are today.

Q: How many waterfalls are there?

A: There are in fact three distinct waterfalls today. The most prevalent and largest one is the horseshoe falls. The next largest is the American Falls and finally the smallest is named the Bridal Vale Falls.

Q: How much water goes over the Falls?
A: The amount of water that travels over the crest of the falls changes during the day and at different times of the year but on average about 80,000 gallons of water per second go over the edge of the Horseshoe and about 40,000 gallons per second over the American Falls.

Q: How tall is the Falls?
A: The Horseshoe Falls are 188 feet tall.

Q: Where is the best spot to view the Falls?
A: The Falls can be seen from both sides of the border however due to the angle of the river at the falls, the best place to view them is from the Canadian side.

Q: How many people visit the Falls?
A: On average, there are now about 8 to 10 million visitors who travel to Niagara Falls every year. Althought this is a large number of people it is still less than the recod numbers who used to visit before 9/11. In thoses days it was normal to see crowds of 12 - 15 millionn people a year.

Q: How deep is the Niagara River?
A: The river’s depth changes all the way along. It can be as shallow as a few feet deep near the crest of the falls to over 180 feet deep at the bottom below the falls. Generally, the river that is on the Great Gorge side of the Falls is deeper than the upper portion because the Falls itself carved out the rock and debris from the bottom as it worked its way through the river.

Q: Does Niagara Falls ever get turned off?
A:No. Niagara Falls is a real natural wonder that is not man made and is not turned on or off.

Q: Are people able to see the Falls in the winter?
A: Yes, the falls is always running and never freezes. The winter is sometimes the most beautiful time to see the falls because the mist it creates covers all the trees and buildings in the area turning the whole place into a winter wonderland. Courtesy of Everything Niagara Falls
